  1. Max's Allegheny Tavern is perfect if you are looking for some really good comfort food. I had the Turkey Reuben which used two potato pancakes instead of rye bread - very good! The potato pancakes tended to have more "filler" than shredded potatoes so they were a bit heavy - but still good. We shared a few appetizers - the Bavarian stuffed pretzel, the sausage and cheese and the pickled herring. I was not brave enough to try the herring but the other two were a big hit.

  2. Max's is a Pittsburgh Tradition--The place hasn't changed in years and that is part of the charm. The beer selection had something for everyone. I did order the pickled herring as I wanted to be adventurous. It was surprisingly good and was my favorite appetizer. I had the sauerbraten with sides of hot german potato salad and applesauce. Skip the applesauce but the potato salad was excellent. I enjoyed my meal.

  3. I loved this place. Great comfort food. Good beer selection and the popcorn at the bar was yummy. I loved the sausage and cheese platter. The pickled herring was very good and who doesn't love a hot pretzel! I got the regular reuben with the potato pancakes and spatzel. Wow, it was heavy but tasty. I do enjoy my potato pancakes with a little more texture but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it!
